Festival Producers Ensure ITV’s Hungry Sailors are Well Fed

You might want to look out for some of Bridport Food Festival’s producers next week – local faces are to feature on Monday’s editions of ITV’s Hungry Sailors programme which first launched last week.

The programme, which airs at 4pm each weekday afternoon for the next few weeks, sees the Sailors, Dick Strawbridge and his son James, docking their boat in destinations along the South Coast, from Fowley in Cornwall to the mouth of the River Thames, and getting hands-on with local food.

Dorset-based Denham Productions, the team behind the show, enlisted the help of producers including Four Seasons Preserves, Gourmet Goats, Leakers Bakery and Washingpool Farm Shop to showcase their produce – so tune in to see the people behind the food. The show is repeated at 5pm on ITV+1.

The well-attended meeting heard, from the Chairperson, Amanda Streatfeild, that once again the 2011 Bridport Food Festival had been a great success and continues to be a splendid advertisement for the excellent local food and drink that we have in the area. Amanda emphasised that the Food Festival is totally dependent upon volunteers and sponsors; she thanked everyone for their continued support and appealed for more help with next year’s event.

The Festival, which will next year run from Sunday 11^th to Sunday 17^th June 2012 inclusive, is a week long event which aims to promote and celebrate the wonderful variety of local food and drink there is in the area. The events organised include talks, workshops and farm walks and culminates on the Saturday with a magnificent Showcase event alongside the Bridport Beer Festival in Askers Meadow [Saturday 17^th June 2012].

Food producers, manufacturers, retailers, hospitality outlets, etc are being encouraged to actively get involved now to maximise the promotion opportunity.

Hello Festival Friends

Many thanks for signing up to the Festival newsletter via our website.

It seems hard to believe that a full five months have passed since the busy week of events at Bridport Food Festival 2011. We’re pleased to announce the dates for next year’s celebration will be 10 – 17^th June, with the main event on Asker Meadows taking place on Saturday 16^th June.

Bridport Food Festival AGM:

In the meantime the Festival AGM takes place on Monday 28^th November next week and anyone interested in finding out about the Festival, becoming a Sponsor or even getting involved is invited to come along to West Bay’s Salt House November from 6pm. It’s a chance to meet some of the people behind the event and perhaps share your ideas. Please RSVP to amandaS@denhay.co.uk. Refreshments will be served from Washingpool Farm, Leakers Bakery, The History Girls, John Gundry and Palmers while Tom Munro from AONB will be saying a few words. We hope to see you there!

Spend Less Eat Better:

You are no doubt aiming to source your festive food locally this Christmas and the “Spend Less Eat Better” initiative from Transition Town Bridport has some good news – it costs no more than going to the supermarket! The initiative was launched following a survey of prices and quality of vegetables and fruit available within walking distance of Bridport’s Bucky Doo Square. So keeping ££s in the local economy is not just good for Bridport, but sensible spending. For more information visit the Transition Town website.

Back Bridport’s Food Credentials:

If you’d like to help highlight Bridport’s food credentials to a wider audience then you might want to send your nomination to the Western Morning News. Its search, in association with Taste of the West, for the Best Food Town in the South-West area is looking for evidence of local food being used in shops and by chefs, served up as school meals and at street markets, as well as special events like communal meals and food festivals. The deadline for entries is December 9^th and the link below will take you to the application form and details on how to submit it.

Festive Food Courses

Washingpool Farm Shop recently scooped Gold in the Taste of the West Awards and are continuing to share this food expertise with courses at its HQ with Dorset Foodie Christine McFadden and Maya Pieris of Four Seasons Preserves. Beer Festival Friday Fun

From 6pm on Friday 17th June join the Round Table as the Beer Festival launches in Asker Meadows Bridport. Sample over 60 cask beers and ciders and enjoy a Hog Roast and BBQ from the Lions Club of Bridport. The fun continues on Saturday 18th June.

On Friday evening (June 17th) Food & Drink Question Time will take place at the Bull Hotel in East Street, Bridport where a panel of local experts will be tested with culinary conundrums. Panelists will be chef Mark Hix, grower Michael Michaud, Cleeves Palmer from Palmers Brewery and Caroline Parkins of Leakers Bakery with George Streatfeild from Denhay Farms as compere. The event starts at 7pm and tickets costing £5 are available from Leakers Bakery and the Bull Hotel. Mark Hix wlll also be signing copies of his latest book, ‘Hix Oyster and Chop House’.

Everything Stops for Tea – 15th June at the Salt House

Tickets are now available for Everything Stops For Tea – a fascinating insight into the history of that most British of occasions the Afternoon Tea. Though dismissed by some as archaic, the afternoon tea is still enjoyed widely today and in this fascinating talk Food Historian Maya Pieris will explore its popularity.

This one-off event takes place at 2.30 on Wednesday 15th June at the The Salt House, West Bay.
Tickets are £5 which includes a home-made Cream Tea. Bookings on 01308 458703.

The event is organised by Bridport Museum, and is just one of the many events taking place during the week of the Bridport Food Festival.

Bridport will become a food lovers haven for a full week when the annual Food Festival launches on the 12th June . Highlights to include Open Farms, Food Film Screenings, Food Photography Competition, Shop Tastings, Cookery Demonstrations, Kids Workshops and Special Menus and a much anticipated Food & Drink Lovers Question Time.

And that’s all before the Festival’s Outdoor Event at Asker Meadows on June 18th!
